The tradition of naval aviation at NAS Whidbey Island began when the first PBY Catalina seaplane landed in Crescent Harbor in December 1942. School children have never seen early planes from NAS Whidbey or heard about those who flew them into action in the South Pacific and Aleutian campaigns. A new PBY Memorial Foundation formed by CAT veterans and enthusiasts, to preserve the legacy of the great "CAT" and other Navy amphibious aircraft by establishing a permanent memorial on the Seaplane Base. The Base itself, was built primarily for the PBY Catalina flying boat. The centerpiece of the Memorial will be a fully restored PBY Catalina. |
